Drifting into Irwindale for Some Formula D

2017 Formula Drift in 1 minute

At Element Case, we like stuff that gets our motors running, both figuratively and literally. So, we drifted on up from San Diego to the LA Basin to catch the last-ever Formula Drift event at the Irwindale Speedway.

For those unacquainted, professional drifting first came to the United States with a one-off exhibition at Irwindale in 2003. The event was such a success (the first time the Speedway sold out its 10,000 seats) that it spawned the Formula D Series…and the Speedway has become the most iconic venue for the sport in the U.S.

But next January, the “House of Drift” is closing, to be demolished and replaced by a shopping mall. Drifting away into mere memories.

Legends in the sport, who’ve been competing at Irwindale from the start, came to say their goodbyes and put on a show. A new champion was crowned, as well: Irishman James Deane nabbing his first Formula D title.

Drifting is a natural connection for Element. The sport is all about creativity and inventiveness, with judging criteria focused on three aspects: line, angle, and style. Given our approach to engineering, the way we design our cases…yeah, we can relate to that. Not to mention, we’re about to roll out a new case for iPhone X that we’re calling Formula.

On an October Saturday at the Speedway, with the cars and the crowds and the volume and the venue, we really felt like we were in our Element.

If you catch our drift.

Top 5 Thrills and Spills from Moto Beach Classic 2017

We’re back.

Didn’t mean to go all Rip Van Winkle on everyone, but there’s really no other explanation for the hibernation that’s been going on at the Element Case blog. But we’ve taken a giant yawn, cleared the crust from our eyes, and did some major stretching. And now we’re ready to roll. First stop: Bolsa Chica Beach, California!

Sun & sand. Surf & sounds. Stunts & sprints. The Roland Sands Moto Beach Classic is the definitive Southern California experience, bringing together bikes and (surf)boards and bands—plus a whole bunch of people looking to have a great time on the shores of the Pacific. All that appeared to be missing from the mix was Element Case.

So, naturally, we had to go there.

In addition to getting folks to visit our booth and trade in their old cases for a shiny new REV, we also did some spectating ourselves. Here are the top five thrills and spills that we enjoyed:

1. The Crashes

2. The Motorcycles

3. The Racing

4. The Squatch

5. The Stunts
